An ARDS patient successfully treated with noninvasive mechanical ventilationYusuf Savran, Tuğba Başoğlu, Güntuğ Güngör, Sevgi ÖztürkDokuz Eylul University, Department Of İnternal Medicine, Izmir, TurkeySince, still controversial and not often applied we would like to share our acute respiratory distress syndrome patient successfully treated with noninvasive mechanical ventilation. 26 year-old male patient with the diagnosis of Burkitt lymphoma was admitted to our intensive care unit because of neutropenic fever and sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome after chemoterapy. Although PO2/FiO2=114.2,we started noninvasive mechanical ventilation because the patient was conscious and cooperative. We applied noninvasive mechanical ventilation for 72 hours by manipulating the pressures and time periods according to the arteriel blood gas results and successfully weaned the patient. Especially in the early phases of acute respiratory distress syndrome and in selected patients noninvasive mechanical ventilation should be tried before intubation but should not be insisted if the patient deteriorates.
