Usage of Video/Films in the Medical Ethics Education and “Monday Mornings” Series Suggestion

Besides the knowledge and skill, expected and desired from the physician it is possible to be aware of especially the values of physicians, patients and society.. In this sense, understanding and explaining of values is possible with ethics education during medical training. The teaching methods applied in ethics education should be influential on the moral development of the students and should be of a quality that will provide them with adequate education on approaches to ethical problems. In this purpose, as a teaching method that removes students from passive learning and appeals to many senses, the demonstration of “Monday Mornings” would be offered to the medical specialists.
The serial was adapted by Sanjay Gupta's book, “Monday Mornings”, which was published in March of 2012 and broadcasted in only 10 episodes in 2013. The series goes through the hospital environment. This series included, the ethical problems experienced by physicians who have different personal traits (especially surgeons) in the context of the cases and the actions they perform when they face these problems. In this way, we believe that the "Monday Mornings" would be assessed during ethical training and contributed with sample case presentations to the values that need to be discussed. Due to this cause, in our study, it is aimed to emphasize the reasons for the suggestion of the series and the values are applied in the series.

Tıp Etiği Eğitiminde Video/Film Gösterimi ve "Monday Mornings" Dizi Önerisi

Hekimlikten beklenilen ve istenilen, bilgi ve becerisinin yanısıra hem kendi değerlerinin hem de toplumun ve özellikle sorumlu olduğu hastasına ait değerlerin farkında olabilmesidir. Bu anlamda değerlerin anlaşılması ve anlamlandırılması tıp eğitimi süresince verilecek etik eğitimi ile mümkündür. Etik eğitiminde uygulanan öğretim yöntemlerinin, öğrencilerin ahlâki gelişimine etkisi olacak ve etik sorunlara yaklaşımı konusunda donanımlı yetişmelerini sağlayacak nitelikte olması gerekmektedir. Bu amaçla tıp etiği alanı uzmanlarına, öğrencileri pasif öğrenimden uzaklaştıran ve birçok duyularına hitap eden öğretim yöntemlerinden olan video/film gösteriminin önemi ve bu çerçevede “Monday Mornings” dizisi önerilecektir.
Dizi, Sanjay Gupta’nın 2012 yılı Mart ayında yayınlanan “Monday Mornings” isimli kitabından kurgulanmış ve 2013 yılında yalnızca 10 bölüm olarak yayınlanmıştır. Dizi, hastane ortamında geçmektedir. Dizide farklı kişilik özelliklerine sahip hekimlerin (özellikle cerrahların) vakalar özelinde yaşadıkları etik sorunlar ve bu sorunlar karşısında ortaya koydukları eylemler yer almaktadır. Bu anlamda “Monday Mornings” dizisinin, etik eğitimi süresince değerlendirilmesi ve konuşulması gereken değerlere örnek vaka sunumları ile katkısı olacağı kanısındayız. Bu nedenle çalışmamızda, dizinin önerilme nedenleri ile birlikte dizide yer alan değerlerin vurgulanması amaçlanmıştır.
