Aim: To assess the effects of the coronavirus 2019 pandemic on Turkish ophthalmologists.
Material and Methods: In this survey study, an online questionnaire consisting of 40 questions was directed to volunteers who were actively working ophthalmologists. The questions were asked under the main topics such as demographic characteristics, working conditions and order, follow-up of the ophthalmology patients and level of knowledge and anxiety about the coronavirus 2019 pandemic.
Results: This study comprised of 161 ophthalmologists, of whom 78 were females and 83 were males. They were predominatly consultant ophthalmologists (71%), with 128 living in the metropolitan areas. 54.4% reported decreased weekly working hours, 52.5% were attending routine outpatient clinics, 52.8% were working in the COVID-19 related units, 67.1% were continuing only emergency operations, and 52% reported a disruption of follow-up procedures of the chronic eye patients. Although 64% thought that ophthalmologists were in the high risk group, almost all participants were using masks (99%). Paralell to this, 91% expressed high anxiety level with respect to the pandemic, the most common cause of this anxiety (83%) being the risk of transmitting the disease to their family members. 12.5% considered the level of knowledge about the pandemic being insufficient. And majority of the participants (46%) thought that daily life conditions would normalize in 2 to 5 months.
Conclusion: Close proximity during the patient examination led to concerns about the encountered risks among ophthalmologists. In our country, due to an exponentially increasing number of the COVID-19 cases, there is a proportional decrease in the number of patients and surgeries in the ophthalmology clinics. As a result, the ophthalmologists are unwillingly appointed in the high risky units. It may be concluded relatively that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about the high level of anxiety among the ophthalmologists.

Bulgular: Anketi cevaplayan göz hekimi sayısı 161 olup, 78’i kadın 83’ü erkek idi. Çoğunluğu uzman doktor (%71) olup, 128’i büyükşehirlerde yaşamakta idi. Katılımcıların % 54.4’ü haftalık çalışma saatlerinde azalma olduğunu, %52.5’i rutin polikliniğe devam ettiğini, %52.8’i COVID-19 ile ilgili birimlerde çalıştığını, %67.1’i sadece acil ameliyatların devam ettiğini, %52’si kronik göz hastalarının takiplerinin aksadığını belirtti.
