Vertebral Compression Fracture in a Patient with Hyperthyroidism: A Case Report

Osteoporosis in men is an important public health problem, and its prevalence is increasing as the population ages. Although traditionally considered a women's health issue, osteoporosis-related mortality and morbidity rates are higher in men. Although the lifetime risk of hip fracture is lower in men than in women, men are twice as likely to die after a hip fracture. All men diagnosed with osteoporosis should be evaluated for secondary causes of bone loss such as hypogonadism, corticosteroid use, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, low calcium intake, vitamin D deficiency and hypothyroidism. Here we aim to present a male patient who was detected to have osteoporotic vertebral fractures and in whom the etiology was diagnosed as hyperthyroidism.

Erkeklerde osteoporoz önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunudur ve yaşlı populasyon arttıkça görülme sıklığı artmaktadır. Osteoporoz geleneksel olarak kadın sağlığı sorunu olarak kabul edilmesine rağmen, osteoporoz ilişkili mortalite ve morbidite oranları erkeklerde daha yüksektir. Yaşam boyu kalça kırığı riski erkeklerde kadınlardan daha düşük olmasına rağmen, kalça kırığı sonrası mortalite erkeklerde iki kat fazladır. Osteoporoz tanısı konulan bütün erkeklerde sekonder neden olarak hipogonadizm, kortikosteroid kullanımı, sigara, aşırı alkol tüketimi, düşük kalsiyum alımı, D vitamini eksikliği ve hipotiroidi gibi nedenler araştırılmalıdır. Burada osteoportik vertebra kırığı tesbit edilen ve hipertiroidizm tanısı koyduğumuz erkek olguyu sunmayı amaçladık.
