Paget's Disease of bone: A case report

Paget’s disease of bone is a chronic disease of unknown etiology that affects mainly elderly population. Genetic and environmental factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of disease. Paget disease is characterized by increased bone resorption followed by excessive new bone formation. The diagnosis is usually made incidentally during radiological investigations for other conditions or because of an unexpected elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase. Pain in the involved bones is the most common symptom of disease. Nitrogen containing bisphosphonates are first line drugs in the treatment. In this study we present a patient diagnosed with Paget’s disease and discuss the features of this disorder which is of importance in the elderly population.

Kemiğin Paget hastalığı çoğunlukla yaşlı populasyonu etkileyen, etiyolojisi bilinmeyen, kronik seyirli bir hastalıktır. Hastalık patogenezinde genetik ve çevresel faktörler önemli rol oynamaktadır. Paget hastalığı artmış kemik rezorpsiyonunu takiben aşırı kemik formasyonu ile karakterizedir. Tanı genellikle tesadüfen başka hastalıkların radyolojik incelemeleri sırasında veya beklenmeyen serum alkalen fosfataz yüksekliği ile konur. En sık görülen semptom tutulan kemiklerde fokal ağrıdır. Tedavide ilk seçenek nitrojen içeren bifosfonatlardır. Bu çalışmada Paget hastalığı tanısı konulan bir olgu sunduk ve ileri yaş grubunun önemli bir hastalığı olması nedeniyle hastalığın özelliklerini tartıştık.
