Tiroid ve paratiroid cerrahisinin tarihi binlerce yıl öncesine uzanmasına rağmen, çağdaş zamana ön- cülük eden gelişmeler yalnızca yüz yıl kadar önce başlamıştır. Bu alana öncülük edenler arasında Billroth, Kocher, Mayo ve Halsted bulunmaktadır. Güvenli ve etkili bir tiroid cerrahisinin temeli tiro- id anatomi ve patolojisini anlamaktan geçer. Uy- gun bir cerrahi teknik ile yapılan total lobektomi ve total tiroidektomiden sonra rekürren larengeal sinir, paratiroid dokusu ve süperior larengeal sinir eksternal dalının hasar görme riski çok azdır. Gü- venli cerrahi, bir dizi mantıklı, düzenli ve anatomik bilgiye dayalı özel bir operasyon planı gerektirir. Bu makalede amaç tiroid cerrahisinin tarihsel ge- lişimi, fizyolojinin cerrahi üzerindeki etkisi, tiroid anatomisi, operasyon komplikasyonları ve cerrahi tekniklerdeki güncel gelişmeleri literatür eşliğin- de gözden geçirmektir.

The history of thyroid and parathyroid surgery da- tes back thousands of years, but the developments leading to the contemporary era began just over a century ago. Pioneers in the field include Bill- roth, Kocher, Mayo, and Halsted. The cornerstone of safe and effective thyroid surgery is thorough training in and understanding of thyroid anatomy and pathology. With appropriate techniques, total thyroid lobectomy and total thyroidectomy can be undertaken with minimal risk of damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerves, the external branches of the superior laryngeal nerves, and the parath- yroid glands. Safe surgery procedure requires a specific operative plan, progressing in a series of logical, orderly, anatomically based steps. This ar- ticle to aim, the historical progress of operating on the thyroid and the impact of physiology on surgery, surgical anatomy for thyroid, complicati- ons of surgery and recent advances in technics.
